On Saturday, JP O Meachair and George Kinnell competed in the weightlifting open competition at MSc Performance in Birmingham.
George was up first, unfortunately he weighed in at 69.05kg (missing weight by <50g!) so was the lightest lifter in the 77kg category.
He started off with some issues in the snatch, missing 74kg behind, then 75kg in front. On his final attempt he snatched 75kg to stay in the competition.
The clean and jerk portion went much better, where he went 3/3 with 102kg/108kg/112kg, the resulting 112kg lift being a new competition best.
Whilst he wasn't happy with his performance in the snatch, he still managed to secure an invite to the Central Invitational next month.
Weighing in as an 85kg lifter, JP was in the last session of the day with the 77kg+ men. Things were feeling good in the warm up so he bumped his starting snatch weight up to 75kg, which he powered, he followed this with another power snatch at 80kg. For his final attempt he attempted to match his personal best of 85kg but unfortunately it wasn't there on the day.
The clean and jerk portion went well for him, hitting 105kg and 110kg, with a much more solid lockout than in his last competition. For his third, he went all out with an attempt at 115kg (5kg more than he had ever tried before!) but was unsuccessful in racking it.
He finished 2nd(!!) in his class with a 190kg total, for a massive 12kg improvement over his last competition.
On the whole a good day, the guys also got to witness one of the 105kg+ lifters end the day with a 140kg Snatch and 180kg Clean and Jerk in JP's session, as well as a 187kg Power Clean!
